of legal warranty from delivery. Parts and labour included.

The rule

The air conditioner is named in s. 38.1 and its warranty lasts 6 years under the regulation. It comes on top of the manufacturer's warranty: when that one ends, the legal warranty continues.

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • The unit blows air but no longer cools (compressor).
  • The fan or the motor stops working.
  • The remote works, but the unit no longer responds (control board).

What isn't covered

  • Cleaning or replacing the filter (s. 38.3).
  • Damage caused by a fall or by an installation that goes against the instructions.
  • Accessories, like the remote or the window kit, unless they're provided for by regulation.

Air conditioner or heat pump? A wall unit that cools and heats is usually a heat pump. The length is the same: 6 years.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions
