In short
- Length: 4 years from delivery.
- Same length for a small TV or a big screen.
- Excluded: a screen broken by an impact and accessories like the remote.
- A high-end TV may be entitled to more under the reasonable lifespan warranty (s. 38).

The rule
The television is named in s. 38.1. The regulation sets its warranty of good working order at 4 years. For a TV bought online, the warranty starts on the date it's delivered to your door (s. 38.4).
Examples of covered breakdowns
- The screen stays black while the sound works (backlight, board).
- Lines or dead zones appear without any impact.
- An HDMI port or the built-in Wi-Fi stops working.
- The TV keeps restarting.
What isn't covered
- A screen cracked after an impact: that's damage, not a working-order defect.
- The remote and other accessories not provided for by regulation (s. 38.3).
- Damage caused by a badly installed wall mount.
After 4 years
The reasonable lifespan warranty (s. 38) takes the price into account. A TV worth several thousand dollars that gives out after 5 years may still be covered. It has no fixed length and is assessed case by case.
It broke: the steps
- Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
- Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
- Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
- If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.
Frequently asked questions
Is my TV bought on a website covered?
If you bought it from a merchant in Quebec, yes. For a distance purchase, the merchant must state the warranty length in the contract it sends you.
The store says I have to bring the TV to a repair shop. Who pays for transport?
The merchant or the manufacturer pays reasonable transport or shipping costs (s. 38.5).
