Dryer: 5-year warranty with Bill 29

A new dryer bought from a merchant since October 5, 2026 must be repaired for free for 5 years, parts and labour.

5years

of legal warranty from delivery. Parts and labour included.

In short

  • Length: 5 years from delivery.
  • Electric or gas.
  • Excluded: lint filter, vent cleaning and other normal maintenance.
  • A badly installed exhaust vent is the installer's responsibility.

The rule

The law names the clothes dryer in s. 38.1. The regulation gives it a 5-year warranty of good working order from delivery (s. 38.4).

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • The dryer turns but no longer heats (heating element, thermostat).
  • The drum no longer turns (motor).
  • The moisture sensor or the control board stops working.

What isn't covered

  • Emptying the lint filter and cleaning the exhaust vent: that's normal maintenance (s. 38.3).
  • Damage from abusive use.
  • Accessories not provided for by regulation, like a drying rack.

Safety: a clogged vent makes the appliance overheat. Clean it regularly: it's your part of the maintenance, and it keeps anyone from blaming a lack of maintenance.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions

My dryer and washer were delivered the same day. Do the warranties end at the same time?

Yes, both are covered 5 years from delivery.

The store wants to sell me an extended warranty for the dryer. Should I take it?

Before offering it, the merchant must tell you about the warranty provided by law. Read our guide on extended warranties to see what it would really add.
