Computer: 3-year warranty with Bill 29

A new laptop or desktop computer bought from a merchant since October 5, 2026 is covered 3 years, parts and labour, if it's bought for personal use.

3years

of legal warranty from delivery. Parts and labour included.

In short

  • Length: 3 years from delivery, laptop or desktop.
  • For a personal purchase: the law protects the consumer.
  • Excluded: charger and accessories not provided for by regulation, damage from abusive use.
  • Back up your files before any repair.

The rule

Section 38.1 names the desktop computer and the laptop computer. Both have a 3-year warranty of good working order under the regulation, starting at delivery.

Personal or business use

The Consumer Protection Act protects the consumer, meaning a person who buys for themselves. A computer bought by a business for its activities is in principle not covered.

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • The computer no longer starts (motherboard, internal power supply).
  • The laptop's built-in screen shows lines or stays black without any impact.
  • The built-in keyboard, the trackpad or a USB port stops working.

What isn't covered

  • The charger, the mouse and other accessories not provided for by regulation (s. 38.3).
  • A spilled liquid or a fall: those are damage, not working-order defects.
  • Normal maintenance.

Before the repair: make a copy of your files. The warranty covers the device, not your data.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions

Is my laptop battery covered?

The law doesn't deal with the battery separately. It excludes normal maintenance and accessories not provided for by regulation. A built-in battery is part of the computer. If they refuse, ask for a written explanation and check with the OPC.

I built my desktop computer with parts bought separately. Is it covered?

The law covers a new desktop computer sold by a merchant. Parts sold separately aren't a computer within the meaning of this list. The general warranties (s. 37 and 38) apply to each part.
