What Bill 29 provides for your fridge

Bill 29 added a warranty of good working order to the Consumer Protection Act. The refrigerator is named directly in the law (s. 38.1) and the regulation sets its length at 6 years. The warranty is free and automatic: you have nothing to buy or register.

Example: a fridge delivered on November 15, 2026 is covered until November 15, 2032.

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • The fridge no longer cools, or cools poorly (compressor, thermostat, fan).
  • The control board or the display stops working.
  • The built-in water dispenser or ice maker breaks down.

In these cases, the repair is free: parts and labour (s. 38.2).

What isn't covered

  • Normal maintenance: replacing the water filter, cleaning the coils (s. 38.3).
  • Damage from abusive use, for example a door forced open or a fridge moved without care.
  • Accessories not provided for by regulation.

What about spoiled food? The warranty of good working order covers repairing the appliance. For other losses, other remedies under the Consumer Protection Act may exist. Check with the Office de la protection du consommateur.

After 6 years

The reasonable lifespan warranty (s. 38) still applies: a fridge must be fit for normal use for a reasonable time, given its price and conditions of use. It has no fixed length.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions

My fridge was bought on October 1, 2026 and delivered on October 10. Is it covered?

The warranty of good working order applies to purchases made on or after October 5, 2026. A purchase made before that date isn't covered, even if delivery happened after. The general warranties (s. 37 and 38) still apply.

The salesperson says the warranty was one year. Are they right?

One year is often the manufacturer's warranty. The Bill 29 warranty is different and lasts 6 years for a new refrigerator bought since October 5, 2026.

Do I have to pay for the technician's trip?

No. The merchant or the manufacturer pays the reasonable transport or shipping costs related to the repair (s. 38.5).
