Tablet: 3-year warranty with Bill 29

A new tablet bought from a merchant since October 5, 2026 must be repaired for free for 3 years if it stops working properly.

  • All brands: the law's term is simply electronic tablet.
  • Excluded: a screen cracked in a fall, charger, case and other accessories.

The rule

The electronic tablet is named in s. 38.1. The regulation gives it a 3-year warranty of good working order, like the cell phone and the computer.

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • The tablet no longer turns on or no longer charges, for no apparent reason.
  • The touchscreen no longer responds, without any impact.
  • The charging port, the speakers or the camera stop working.

What isn't covered

  • A cracked screen or a tablet dropped in water: those are damage.
  • The charger, cable, case or stylus, if they're not provided for by regulation (s. 38.3).

Kid's tablet: it's covered like any other. Keep the receipt even if it was a gift: the warranty follows the device.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions

I got the tablet as a gift. Am I covered?

Yes. The warranty follows the item (s. 38.6). Ask the person who gave it to you for the receipt or a proof of purchase.

The manufacturer wants me to ship it at my own cost. Is that right?

No. Reasonable shipping costs related to a covered repair are paid by the merchant or the manufacturer (s. 38.5).
