The rule

The dishwasher is named in s. 38.1. The regulation sets its warranty at 5 years, like the washer and the dryer. It starts at delivery (s. 38.4).

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • Water no longer drains (drain pump).
  • The dishes stay cold or no longer dry (heating element).
  • A leak caused by a defective part.
  • The cycle stops with an error code (control board).

What isn't covered

  • Cleaning the filter and normal maintenance (s. 38.3).
  • Damage from abusive use, for example an object that doesn't belong in the machine.
  • Accessories not provided for by regulation, like a cutlery basket.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions

The technician says it's wear and tear. Is that excluded?

The law excludes normal maintenance and damage from abusive use (s. 38.3). A breakdown isn't excluded just because the appliance was used normally. Ask for a written explanation.

My dishwasher was installed by a plumber. Who is responsible for the warranty?

The merchant who sold it and the manufacturer. A problem caused by the installation falls to the installer instead.
