Stove: 6-year warranty with Bill 29

Electric, gas or induction, a new stove bought from a merchant since October 5, 2026 must be repaired for free for 6 years.

6years

of legal warranty from delivery. Parts and labour included.

In short

  • Length: 6 years from delivery.
  • Electric, gas or induction: the law's word is simply stove (cuisinière in French).
  • Built-in oven or cooktop sold on its own: the law doesn't say.
  • Excluded: normal maintenance and damage from abusive use.

Calculate your warranty end date

The warranty starts at delivery (s. 38.4).

The rule

The stove is the first item named in s. 38.1. The regulation gives it a 6-year warranty of good working order, starting at delivery. Parts and labour are included (s. 38.2).

Examples of covered breakdowns

  • An element or an induction zone no longer heats.
  • The oven no longer reaches temperature.
  • The control panel or the control board breaks down.
  • The igniter on a gas model stops working.

What isn't covered

  • Cleaning and normal maintenance (s. 38.3).
  • Glass or a surface broken by an impact: that's damage, not a working-order problem.
  • Accessories not provided for by regulation, like a rack or a removable griddle.

Built-in oven, cooktop: the law names the stove (cuisinière). For a wall oven or a cooktop bought separately, the text doesn't settle it. Check with the OPC. The general warranties of sections 37 and 38 apply in every case.

It broke: the steps

  1. Gather your proof: the receipt and proof of the delivery date (email, delivery slip). Take a photo or video of the problem.
  2. Choose who to contact: the merchant, the manufacturer, or both. Neither one can send you to the other.
  3. Make your request in writing and keep a copy. Our free letter generator cites the right sections.
  4. If they refuse: see what to do when the store refuses.

Frequently asked questions

My gas stove was installed by a contractor. Who do I contact?

The merchant who sold it to you, the manufacturer, or both. If the contractor sold you the appliance, they're the merchant. An installation problem falls under their service contract instead.

Does the warranty cover a leased stove?

Yes, if it's a long-term lease of a new item made with a merchant since October 5, 2026 (s. 38.1).
